Heritage at Risk
Our Heritage at Risk Program
Our Heritage @ Risk is a two stage national program designed to publicise natural and cultural heritage which is at risk across Australia.
The first stage involves identifying the top ten places at risk in each State which are then nominated for the National top ten heritage places at risk.
In South Australia the program has been very effective in attracting media attention to endangered heritage, particularly local heritage.
National Trust of South Australia announces its Heritage@Risk list for 2011.
The announcement of the Ten Heritage Items Most at Risk was made by President David Beaumont at a successful fundraising function at Ayers House, North Terrace Adelaide on Friday August 16th.
The passionate sentiments expressed about our declining Heritage by the guest speaker , the Hon. Alexander Downer (former Foreign Minister and currently Special Adviser on Cyprus to the Secretary General of the United Nations), was well receievd. In May this year Alexander eagerly advocated the adaptive re-use of vacant heritage listed buildings in the City of Adelaide. (Advertiser 30 May).
David Beaumont said: “The top ten was chosen from numerous nominations submitted by the general public and members of the National Trust. The people of SA know that the National Trust stands for saving, protecting, advocating and increasing knowledge of SA’s heritage and they continue to submit numerous items under extreme danger of loss or degradation.
The Heritage@ Risk exhibition can be viewed at The Reading Room ( a Renew Adelaide space) at 153 Hindley Street until September 30th. Opening hours 2pm - 7pm Monday to Saturday.
The Australian list:
This is the 13th year for the Australia wide State and Territory National Trusts to have presented their heritage and endangered places program. This year the program includes natural and built heritage, collections, intangible and moveable heritage. The Australian Council of National Trusts will release a National list of the Ten Australian items most at risk in October 2011 at the joint ICOMOS and ACNT Watermarks Conference in Melbourne. The partners in the preparation of that list are Australian Institute of Architects and the Australian Historical Association.
