Significant Tree 292: Quandong Tree, Quorn

Quandong

Botanical name: Santalum acuminatum

Common name: Quandong

Local name: Native Peach

In the mid 1970s Brian Powell recognised the commercial potential of Quandongs, and undertook a project to domesticate the fruit in an orchard environment. The CSIRO heard about Brian's work and took on the task of determining how to successfully germinate the quandong. Three hundred and fifty plants were produced, which were then planted at Endilloe as a test crop. This was the start of a ten-year trial and the first attempt to domesticate quandongs anywhere in the world, taking four years for the trees to fruit.

Nominated to the Trust’s Register of Significant Trees for trees of botanic significance.

Location and Access:

The trees are located on `Endilloe` which is the property of Mr Brian Powell. It is located off the Quorn to Hawker road at Quorn.
