Holdfast Shores Sail Mast

History

Soon after the arrival of Governor Hindmarsh aboard HMAS Buffalo on December 28, 1836 a flagstaff was erected on the first ridge of sand-hills immediately south of the Patawalonga mouth to signify the command post of the new British province, later colony, of South Australia. In 1839, a Signal Mast was erected near this site on the second sand-hill from the sea at the end of Adelaide Road which is now called Anzac Highway so as to be clearly visible from another signal mast on West Terrace, Adelaide.
