Robe CSIRO Research Station

Robe CSIRO Station

History

This CSIRO field station, which operated between 1935 and 1976, was the site of research on pasture trace minerals deficiency in the diet of local sheep. In 1956 Station scientist Hedley Marston detected abnormal levels of radioactive iodine in the thyroid glands of local sheep, which he attributed to fallout from recent nuclear bomb tests carried out in Maralinga, South Australia (1100 km away).
