Sharam Cottages

Sharram Cottages

The original Sharam Cottages for which the Lane is most famous is across the Lane on the south side. Asked by Alexander Cameron, the founder of Penola in 1850, to set up a bootmaking business, Christopher Sharam built a two roomed cottage of blackwood slabs and a bark roof out of timber from the banks of a nearby swamp. It was here that the William, second child of Christie and Ellen Sharam was born and according to local legend was suckled by Aboriginal women who were fascinated by his white skin. By the mid 1860s and at a time when there were at least nine of the fifteen Sharam children, a second cottage of four rooms was built of sawn slabs arranged vertically for the front wall and a shingle roof. Christie’s customers would come on a Sunday from as far away as Portland and Bordertown and included the popular Australian poet, Adam Lindsay Gordon. Interpretive panels outlining the history of the Sharam family feature at the rear of these cottages and behind this is a colourful and productive herb garden run by National Trust volunteers for the use of the public by donation, and for selling in the local supermarket. This is proving to be a very popular enhancement to the Petticoat Lane experience with people visiting from all over Australia and indeed the world.
