Sheriff Reserve

Open forest with dense bracken understorey. Features several large black wattle (Acacia mearnsii). Conserves a remnant woodland within an area which has been predominantly cleared for agriculture. Acts as a wildlife refuse for a wide range of native fauna.

A significant remnant of an environmental association of which only 5% remains in the Hundred of Naracoorte. 50 indigenous species have been recorded including 5 native orchids and possibly an Acacia species which is rated as vulnerable for SA and SE.

The reserve is contiguous with remnant vegetation to the west.

Fauna surveys have recorded 24 species of birds, 5 species of mammals, 2 species of amphibians and 2 species of reptiles. The reserve hosts a small population of sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) which is rated as vulnerable for SA and SE.

Burkas Road, 4 km northeast of Naracoorte.

Access

The Reserve can be accessed from Naracoorte via Cadgee Road, then 600m down Burkas Road which borders the Reserve on the north.
