NT Registration: id 1233, date 1972.2

History

Hope Cottage - now the Hope Cottage Museum - was one of three cottages built around 1857 by brothers Charles and Michael Calnan, who had recently returned from a successful venture to the Victorian goldfields. Named Faith, Hope and Charity, they were built with the help of a ship's carpenter, using cut stone from a nearby quarry. Records show they were identical in design, each with five large rooms, a garret and a cellar, after the old English style. All had cedar built-in cupboards, wardrobes and dressers. They were the only houses of any size on the island at the time, and many travellers were offered hospitality. Faith has since been demolished, but Hope and Charity survive.
